Condition Summary
Vitamin A deficiency occurs when there is an insufficient intake or absorption of vitamin A, leading to a range of health issues. It commonly results from poor dietary intake, fat malabsorption disorders, or liver diseases. The deficiency can cause symptoms like night blindness, dry eyes (xerophthalmia), and in severe cases, corneal damage (keratomalacia), which can lead to blindness. It can also cause weakened immune system: more susceptibility to infections, especially respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Prevention and treatment include improving dietary intake of vitamin A-rich foods like carrots, dairy and leafy greens, or using vitamin A supplements.
